WP3 aims to provide significant progress along both the novel combustion roadmap and advanced after treatment theme. The combustion roadmap is experimentally assessed on two engine platforms/demonstrators: 1) a mid-speed marine engine focused on low-temperature RCCI combustion development and 2) a high-speed off-road engine, where advanced engine thermal management technologies and 100% Hydrogen combustion are demonstrated.
WP3 also aims for improved aftertreatment conversion efficiency towards ultra-low NOX and PM emissions. Superior performance will be explored with the new aftertreatment and advanced combustion technologies applied simultaneously. The fast progress is enabled by a model-based design methodology, applied for the first time on such a scale in this project. This brings the advantages of detailed CFD simulations towards building unique control-oriented combustion models and couples it towards a full engine-aftertreatment modeling framework. Finally, a model-based optimization routine is developed and used to guide the experimental designs.
